Congratulations! You’ve made the decision to improve your health. New workout clothes are lying neatly folded on the bed next to your ankle socks and heart-rate monitor. Eye of the Tiger is the new soundtrack of your life and you know you’ve got this. Or do you? Because it’s been a few days now and for some reason you still haven’t started.
Procrastination leads to dismay and before you know it, you realize that you are back where you started. But you know what? The beginning is the best place to be and this time let’s kick things off right by developing the mindset for healthy living.
Body transformation begins within and in this post we will review the four crucial elements that will elevate your health game and get you back in the ring.
Here’s Where to Start
When it comes to developing a mindset for health, there is one thing (and one thing only) that you need to fully accept before moving a single step forward. In fact, fully accepting this one thing is what will carry you to success in any endeavor you head out to achieve in your life. What is it? YOU matter.
One of my biggest challenges with committing to a healthy lifestyle was, despite every diet, supplement and ab crunch, I secretly felt that I wasn’t worthy or deserving of it. Thinking back, it’s no surprise that I struggled to find motivation or that eating healthy only lasted a few weeks. What changed things?
One afternoon, I came across a picture quote that said, “Eat like you love yourself”. From that moment, I promised myself that I would take care of my body like I loved myself. Throughout this journey, do you know what I learned?
Self-love isn’t about strengths or weaknesses. Nor is it about will power or carb counts. Rather, self-love is having the understanding that, in this moment, you have value and you matter. It is having the awareness that you are perfectly complete. We instinctively take care of what we value and when you learn to value yourself, living healthy becomes second nature.
Keep it Real
Guilt is like a throwback to the days of single room schools. You know, where the “bad” kids were sent to the corner? Sounds bleak, I know. But the thing to remember is that guilt is nothing more than a punishment directed at ourselves. Even when we’ve had a good day, sticking to our plan, slide in just one salty fry and we scold ourselves.
Patience, in its simplest form, is an expression of love and herein lies the key to eliminating guilt. Understand that healthy living isn’t a crash diet, but rather it’s a lifestyle change and this takes time.
Unfortunately, we have been conditioned to expect instant results. Flip through any magazine and what do you see? A dramatic before and after picture. What you don’t see are the struggles, fears and mental growth that took place in between. Just because you don’t see them doesn’t meant they aren’t real.
These are the very same blocks that you will experience on your healthy living journey. If you have a pulse, at some point you’re going to fall off the wheel.
And when you do, instead of beating yourself up, get back on and ride like the devil’s chasing you. After all, it’s not about the fall, it’s about the strength that you execute to get back up.
Listen to Your Body
However loud the clutter around us is, there is always a faint whisper of our inner voice that can be heard. When it comes to having a healthy mindset, your greatest asset will always be you. Why?
Because it is your body that will signal to you exactly what you need. And when you meet that need with the right fuel, you are unstoppable. Nutrition requirements are given to us as a guideline but keep in mind that each person is unique. This is why it’s vital to listen to the cues that your body gives you.
Whether it’s drinking more water, upping vegetable intake or getting more rest, listen to what the thirst, inflammation and fatigue is telling you.
Remember that healthy living isn’t about a rigid calorie count or a number on the scale. It’s about developing a meaningful dialogue with your body, and that’s when lasting transformation begins. One of the easiest ways to do this is to journal throughout your health journey.
Write down any symptoms and changes that you experience as a result of dietary intake and exercise. By understanding the cause and reaction, you will better discern what you need to add or take away.
But I Can’t See the Road Ahead
The fear of change is real. Even when you know it’s for the best, somehow you find your hands desperately gripping both sides of the door jamb as change pulls you in the opposite direction.
When I made the choice to curb my alcohol intake for health, one of the greatest fears I faced was missing out socially with my friends. It wasn’t eliminating the drink that concerned me. It was the fact that this is how we had fun, and if I didn’t do this, what would replace my weekend nights? Even though my choice was for the best, I didn’t trust that my life would be better.
In all things, there will come a point in life when you will not see the road ahead. The storm winds will howl around you, you’ll find yourself trembling, and visibility will be nearly zero.
Whether its faith in a spiritual being or simply faith that things can’t get worse, use that energy to take one courageous step forward. If you’re crazy enough to take a leap of faith to improve your health, you’ve got to trust that the net will catch you.
Drug companies and “gurus” looking to make a quick buck will convince you that your health cannot be improved without the latest drug or magic herb. But the honest truth is that your health will not improve without YOU.
You are in this for the long haul, and the journey begins with one brave step. After that, it’s a matter of continually putting one foot in front of the other.
